In response to a question related to violence against farmers in Lakhimpur, UP, at Harvard Kennedy School in Boston, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, “We condemn not only Lakhimpur, but other such incidents across the country as well.” Since this matter is of BJP ruled state, just because it should not be made a big issue.

He said, your question is right and I give you the answer of the country, not the Modi government. In India such cases happen in many states and we condemn all. Being in the government, it is our responsibility to take cognizance of every such incident and take action as per law after investigation.

Modi government is not going to sit silent. Union Minister’s son Ashish Mishra has been arrested. The law will take its course. Sitharaman said, but it is necessary that similar promptness should be shown on all incidents of such violence and not just by looking at the state governments. I appeal to you, Dr. Amartya Sen and others who know India to learn to raise their voice on every such incident.

On the question related to the farmers’ movement regarding agricultural laws, Nirmala said, “For a long time many parliamentary committees were discussing the law that the government has brought.

Many political parties have also mentioned this in their election manifestos. But our government also made these laws and got them passed after detailed discussion in the house. Then no one opposed it and now there are demonstrations about it. Sitharaman said, in fact, this whole matter is being made a means to fulfill only political interests and farmers are its pawn.
