Former Tripura CMs Biplab Kumar Deb and Ghulam Ali take oath as Rajya Sabha members

New Delhi. Former Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Ghulam Ali, a leader of the Gurjar Muslim community of Jammu and Kashmir, took oath as members of the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath to both the leaders as members of the Upper House of Parliament in his chamber. This oath was informed in an official statement.

Biplab Kumar Deb takes oath as Rajya Sabha member
Biplab Kumar Deb has been recently elected from Tripura in the by-election to the Rajya Sabha, while Ghulam Ali has been nominated to the Upper House. Deb took oath in Hindi while Ghulam Ali took oath in English. Deb was the Chief Minister of Tripura but was removed from the post by the BJP in May this year. In his place, Manik Saha, a member of the Rajya Sabha and president of the BJP’s Tripura unit, was made the chief minister. Later Saha resigned from the membership of Rajya Sabha. The BJP had made Deb its candidate for this seat. Deb had won the by-election.

Ghulam Ali took oath as Rajya Sabha member from Jammu and Kashmir for the first time after the abrogation of 370
The swearing in of Ghulam Ali as a member of the Rajya Sabha is significant as the community had little representation in legislative bodies before Article 370 was abrogated from Jammu and Kashmir. This is probably the first time that a person from the Gurjar Muslim community of Jammu and Kashmir region has taken the oath of membership of the Upper House as a nominated member.

Senior officials of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat including Deputy Chairman Harivansh, Union Ministers V Muraleedhan, Jitendra Singh and Secretary General of Rajya Sabha PC Modi were also present on the occasion.
