For the past few days, the rule of law has been in disarray in Bangladesh. The trend of mob justice has increased on the streets of Bangladesh. The mob is doing whatever it wants. Sometimes the mob is destroying the statue of its president and sometimes it is burning down the museums built in Bangladesh. In recent times, the incidents of mob killings have also increased. After such a horrific situation, questions have been raised on the Yunus government of Bangladesh regarding law and order.
According to a report in Bangladesh newspaper The Daily Star, 21 people have been killed in the last 38 days. This situation has raised concerns about public safety. Cases have been registered in most of the incidents, but so far only eight people have been arrested in two cases. Legal experts and human rights activists say the interim government’s response has so far been inadequate and has failed to take prompt action against the perpetrators.
Experts believe that the increasing incidents indicate that law and order is completely at stake in Bangladesh. In just three hours between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, two people were killed by mobs in two major universities of Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi media, 32 people were killed by mobs between January and June 2023.
On the other hand, 21 people have been killed in 14 districts since August 11 under the rule of the interim government of Mohammad Yunus. Of these, 12 were killed on charges of theft, robbery or loot, while the other 9 people were killed on charges of various crimes. Police officials say that 11 cases have been registered, while no case has been registered in two incidents. Many officials said that due to frequent transfer of officers and lack of resources, it is becoming difficult to investigate these cases properly.
