Gang rape case: Former chief secretary of Andaman and Nicobar arrested from private resort, bail plea was rejected today

Port Blair: The police on Thursday arrested former chief secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Jitendra Narayan in a case of gang rape. Victim’s lawyer Phatik Chandra Das said Narayan was arrested after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by a local court. Soon after the court’s decision, a team of policemen reached a private resort where Jitendra Narayan was staying and was brought to the police lines amidst heavy security.

The senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer was taken to the hospital for medical examination after his arrest. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has questioned Narayan thrice in this case. The SIT was set up to probe allegations that a 21-year-old girl in Andaman and Nicobar Islands was taken to the chief secretary’s house on the pretext of a government job and then raped by top officials, including Narayan, there.

Narayan’s house was raided on October 18 by a joint team of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Delhi Police, following which he filed a petition in the Delhi High Court requesting him to grant transit anticipatory bail. A single bench of the Delhi High Court had granted him interim relief from arrest till October 28. After this, he filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court requesting to extend the period of this relief.

Narayan argued that the next Circuit Bench of Port Blair would start work from November 14, so till then he should be given relief so that he gets an opportunity to file anticipatory bail before the Andaman and Nicobar court.
