The Ukraine-Russia war that has been going on for years is now becoming a cause of trouble for European countries as well. Germany, which was once the biggest buyer of Russian gas, is now planning not to give additional aid to Ukraine. According to AFP, Germany, which was the biggest aid provider to Ukraine after the US, is now planning to halve its military and financial aid from next year. But being a NATO member, the German government will have to continue helping Ukraine. To deal with this problem, it will take help of the Russian money that it has frozen in its country.
Germany keeps aside 4 billion euros from its budget to help Ukraine, this year it gave this 4 billion euros and the same amount i.e. a total of 8 billion euros in aid to Ukraine. But now the situation is different, Germany has no plans to add more money to the aid amount of 4 billion.
According to FP, sources in the German finance ministry said the German government is well aware of the losses Ukraine could incur if it does not provide additional aid, so it is working together with European countries and the G7 to plan to use Russian money to make up for these losses.
Germany’s internal politics are preventing it from providing additional help to Ukraine. There was a heated debate between the parties on the German budget for 2025, after which Finance Minister Lindner said that our aim is to prevent the state from taking too much debt. However, the German Finance Ministry has said that it is ready to consider additional spending on Ukraine, it will depend on the circumstances, how much help Ukraine needs from us.
In the long-running Ukraine-Russia war, Ukraine is being continuously helped by Western countries. Russia has also been constantly accusing that Western countries are fighting this war instead of Ukraine. Ukraine’s allies are now working on a plan in which a part of Russia’s assets seized around the world will be given to help Kiev in the war against Moscow.
