Get ready for heavy rains in September too, IMD has predicted

After above normal rainfall in August, September is also likely to see above normal rainfall, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast over northwest India and adjoining areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said most parts of India are likely to receive above normal rainfall. However, some areas over far northwest India, many parts of southern peninsula, north Bihar and northeastern Uttar Pradesh as well as most parts of northeast India are likely to receive below normal rainfall.

Addressing a press conference organised through digital medium, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the country is expected to receive above normal rainfall in September, which is 109 per cent of the long period average of 167.9 mm. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the northwestern region including Uttarakhand, parts of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and adjoining areas of Madhya Pradesh.

Mohapatra said, “These areas may receive very heavy rainfall, which may lead to flooding. We should be cautious of landslides, mudslides and mudslides.” He added, “We predict that a low pressure system will develop over the Bay of Bengal every week of the month, resulting in heavy rainfall across the country.”

He said the monsoon is expected to remain in its normal state, and several low pressure systems are likely to develop in the Bay of Bengal, which may move west-northwestwards up to Rajasthan. Mohapatra said these low pressure areas may also move towards the foothills of the Himalayas, and a western disturbance is likely to affect the region in September.
