According to a Moneycontrol report, a top health ministry official said, “The company has been directed to stop manufacturing all products under the eyedrop category till the completion of the investigation.” At the same time, another official said that eye drops blamed for vision loss in America are not sold in India.
Investigation of the pharmaceutical company’s factory
The ministry official said that a team of senior drug inspectors from the state and central government had conducted a joint inspection of the manufacturing unit of Global Healthcare on February 3. During investigation, it was found that the Chennai-based firm had exported two consignments of 24 batches of eyedrops named Artificial Tears to the US. These batches were manufactured in 2021 and 2022.

According to Moneycontrol, this joint investigation report states, ‘No stock of the above batches was found. The firm has maintained control samples of the said batch. Samples were taken for analysis from four batches of these control samples. These samples are currently being tested.
Earlier, the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) had said in a statement that it is withdrawing ‘Artificial Tears Lubricant’ eyedrops made by Chennai-based company Ezricare, LLC and Delsam Pharma due to possible contamination. To date, there have been 55 cases of eye damage, including eye infection, permanent loss of vision and one death from a bloodstream infection, the statement said on Thursday.
