The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has installed GPS on its vehicles used to supply ghee to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the Tirupati temple. The move comes in the wake of a controversy over the alleged use of animal fat in Tirupati temple laddus.
KMF Managing Director M K Jagadeesh said the supply of Nandini ghee has been restored after the TTD awarded it a tender a month ago. ‘Nandini’ is a popular brand of the Karnataka Milk Federation.
KMF Managing Director Jagadeesh said, “We have restored the supply of ghee (to TTD) a month ago. We have installed GPS systems and geo-location devices on the vehicles so that we can track their stops. The aim is to ensure that there is no adulteration.”
GPS (Global Positioning System) is used to find the actual location of a vehicle. According to him, KMF has got a contract to supply 350 tonnes of ghee. He said, “We will supply ghee whenever required.”
Citing a laboratory report on Friday, the TTD said the ghee contained pig fat and other impurities. TTD Executive Officer J Shyamala Rao said laboratory tests had revealed the presence of animal fat and pig fat in selected samples and the board was in the process of blacklisting the contractor who supplied the “adulterated” ghee.
