Group Captain Varun Singh Death: Group Captain Varun Singh, the only survivor of CDS General Bipin Rawat’s helicopter crash, died on Wednesday at the IAF’s Command Hospital in Bangalore. For the past one week, Group Captain Varun Singh was battling between life and death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed grief over his death.

Group Captain Varun Singh suffered serious injuries in the Mi17V5 helicopter crash. His condition was serious. Initially, he was admitted to the Military Hospital in Wellington. But the very next day he was admitted to the Air Force Command Hospital in Bangalore. Since then his condition remained critical.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, who was in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, tweeted that “Airforce pilot Group Captain Varun Singh was a true warrior who fought till his last breath. My deepest sympathies are with his family and friends. In this hour of grief, we Standing firmly with the family.”

Group Captain Varun Singh joined the Air Force in the year 2004. He was a fighter pilot and used to fly the indigenous fighter aircraft, LCA Tejas. Last year i.e. in October 2020, he landed the aircraft on the runway safely despite a mid-air eye failure in the LCA Tejas fighter jet. Although ATC had instructed them to eject from Tejas, they did not leave the aircraft and landed safely along with the aircraft.
For his wisdom and bravery, he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra on Independence Day this year. Presently, Group Captain Varun Singh was posted as a faculty at the Defense Services Staff College in Wellington, Tamil Nadu. On the day of the accident, he had gone to Sulur Airbase to pick up CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and other soldiers.
Because the CDS was to give a lecture on 8 December in the Staff College. But the Me17V5 helicopter from Sulur Airbase, from which all 14 people, including CDS and Group Captain Varun Singh, had taken off for Wellington, met with an accident on the way. The rest 12 people, including the CDS, died on the same day but Group Captain Varun Singh survived despite suffering serious injuries. But this morning he also died in the hospital. Union Ministers Piyush Goyal and Nitin Gadkari have expressed condolences on his death.

Group Captain Varun Singh was also selected for ISRO’s Gaganyaan program in the year 2019. But could not attend the last stage due to medical reasons.

In the month of September this year, Group Captain Varun Singh wrote a letter to the students of Army Public School located at Chandimandir (Chandigarh). He wrote this letter after getting Shaurya Chakra. Group Captain Varun Singh also studied in this school. Because his father had retired from the rank of lieutenant colonel in the army. In this letter, he wrote to the students that it is okay to be a midyoker student.
Because he himself was not a very promising student during his school days. But he did not give up his dream of becoming a pilot. This was the reason that he became a pilot in the Air Force. He wrote to the students that whether they want to go in any field, whether it is art or dance or literature, graphic design, work in it with great dedication. But it takes hard work and time. He wrote that if even a single student is inspired by him, then his purpose of writing this letter will be successful.
