Gujarat: Hotel owner thrashes Dalit who came to pack food, dies painfully

Vadodara. A 45-year-old Dalit man was brutally thrashed by a hotel owner and his staff after an argument over food items in Khanpur taluka of Mahisagar district of Gujarat. The victim has been identified as Raju alias Jayanti Chauhan. He was admitted to a hospital in Vadodara for treatment, where he died during treatment. According to the police, after the death of the victim youth, the section of murder has been increased in this case.

According to the police, during the altercation, the hotel owner and his employee allegedly made casteist remarks against the Dalit man. Bakor police station official said that 45-year-old Raju Vankar died during treatment at a government hospital in Vadodara on Friday night, two days after the incident. Dalit leader and Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani termed the accused as “casteist goons” and demanded their immediate arrest.

Jignesh Mevani also warned to protest if the accused were not arrested. According to the FIR, “Vankar, an autorickshaw driver, had reached the hotel on June 7 to have food. After the meal, he also asked the hotel staff to pack the food to take home. According to the FIR, “However, when Vankar objected to the quantity of packed food saying that it was much less than the amount he had paid, both the accused started fighting with him and making casteist remarks against him. After this, they thrashed Vankar, due to which he was seriously injured.

Vankar’s condition suddenly worsened after the beating
According to a police official, Vankar returned home from the hotel and informed his family members about the incident. He told that in the night Vankar complained of severe stomach pain, after which his wife took him to the government hospital in Mahisagar. According to the police officer, Vankar was later shifted to a hospital in Godhra town of Panchmahal district, from where he was taken to SSG Hospital in Vadodara.

Case registered against the accused under serious sections
The officer said that Vankar was operated upon at SSG Hospital, but he could not be saved. He said that both the accused were booked under IPC sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (voluntarily causing hurt to any person), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 114 (for A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act besides abetment. The officer said that after the banker’s death, IPC section 302 (murder) has also been added to the case.

Jignesh Mevani announced agitation against the incident
Meanwhile, Jignesh Mevani called for protests over the Dalit man’s death, alleging that he died due to a thrashing by “casteist goons”, which caused his liver damage. Mevani said that he would protest demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. He said that until both the accused are arrested, the last rites of the deceased will not be performed.

The incident has also happened in Patan
Earlier, on June 4, villagers in Gujarat’s Patan district allegedly beat up a Dalit man and chopped off his thumb after his nephew had picked up a cricket ball during a match at the school playground. This incident is of Kakoshi village.
