Gujarat Polls: Father did not get ticket, son threw ink on former Union minister Solanki

Ahmedabad. An angry Congress worker on Sunday allegedly threw black ink on senior party leader and former Union minister Bharatsinh Solanki on Sunday over his father being denied ticket for the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections. Police officials and party functionaries said that the incident took place when Solanki was leaving the Congress headquarters Rajiv Bhavan after addressing the media.

Ellisbridge police station inspector BG Chetaria said, “The person who threw black ink on Solanki is also a member of Congress. He is angry because his father is not getting a ticket from Ellisbridge assembly seat (Ahmedabad).” Chetaria said, “The policemen present on the spot recorded his statement. Solanki did not lodge a complaint saying that the person who threw ink at him belonged to his party.

Solanki, who has held many positions

According to the statement of party worker Romain Sutar, he is upset because his father Rashmikant Sutar was not given ticket from Ellisbridge assembly seat. A party functionary said the incident took place when Solanki was leaving the Congress office after attending a press conference and his clothes got inked. Solanki was elected MP twice from Anand Lok Sabha seat. He was also the president of the Gujarat unit of Congress from 2015 to 2018. He has also been the Minister of State for Power, Railways, Drinking Water and Sanitation in the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre.

Voting will be held on 1-5 December

On November 4, the opposition Congress in Gujarat had announced 43 candidates for the assembly elections. The party has fielded Bhikhu Dave from the Ellisbridge seat in Ahmedabad city. This seat was won by Rajesh Shah of BJP in the 2017 elections. Voting for the 182-member state assembly will be held on December 1 and 5. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.
