Gujarat: Triangular contest on AAP’s CM candidate Isudan Gadhvi’s seat, caste equation a big problem

KhambhaliaIn the Gujarat Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi is contesting from Khambhalia. Because of which everyone’s eyes are on this seat. Gadhvi will face a triangular contest in the seat from where the Congress has fielded its sitting MLA Vikram Madam while the BJP has fielded Mulubhai Bera. Gadhvi, who was a popular Gujarati newsreader before entering politics by joining AAP, enjoys a good reputation and has emerged as his party’s chief campaigner in the state. But election experts say that the social equation of this constituency is a challenge for him.

Veteran leader and former Lok Sabha member Madam and former state minister Bera both belong to the Ahir community. Caste-wise, this seat has the highest number of people belonging to the Ahir community, while Muslim voters are also very important. Election watchers say caste will play an important role in the voting and AAP leader Gadhvi could be at a loss. Because the number of voters of his community is very less in this seat while the trend of Muslims is towards Congress. However, Gadhvi has introduced himself as the son of a farmer. He said that he will work for all and will not promote community identity.

Polling will be held in the first phase in Khambhalia
AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has claimed that Gadhvi will win with a record margin. Workers of both Congress and BJP have claimed that the contest is between their parties and AAP will come third in this fight. However, AAP members say that traditionally both the major parties have been “shocked” by their party’s entry.

The BJP won the seat in 2007 and 2012, but lost to the Congress in the 2014 bypoll. The Congress had retained this seat in the 2017 elections. Khambhalia Devbhoomi falls in Dwarka district, which is a part of the Saurashtra region. Voting on this seat is to be held in the first phase on December 1. Voting is to be held in the state on December 5 under the second phase, while the counting of votes will take place on December 8.
