Kullu: The Kullu assembly seat of Himachal Pradesh was in the news recently due to the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This month the PM had reached here to enjoy Dussehra. But now a royal family drama has come into the limelight for this coveted seat. BJP national president JP Nadda has come forward to resolve this issue before the elections to be held on November 12. Actually, Maheshwar Singh, who is a former MLA from Kullu and has been elected MP many times in the past, remains a headache for the BJP these days. He is contesting the seat as an independent after his candidature from the BJP was canceled this week. This seat is occupied by the Congress and the saffron party is desperate to get it back.

Maheshwar Singh is a descendant of the princely state of Kullu and the stick-bardar of Lord Raghunath in Kullu. He plays an important role in Kullu Dussehra. Maheshwar Singh says that his son Hiteshwar does not listen to him since marriage and is unable to persuade him to withdraw as an independent candidate from Banjar seat adjoining Kullu. Angered by Maheshwar Singh, the BJP had canceled his ticket this week. However, JP Nadda reached Shimla on Thursday and had called Maheshwar Singh from Kullu to meet him. It is being told that the BJP President has requested him to withdraw his nomination as an independent candidate so that BJP candidate Narottam Thakur can win the Kullu seat.

Maheshwar Singh had a long conversation. He had a talk first with JP Nadda and then with Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. But till now no result has come out of this. Maheshwar Singh said that his supporters are very angry with this decision and he will take a decision only after going and talking to them in Kullu. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 29.

A senior BJP leader looking at Himachal Pradesh told News18 that Kullu and Banjar seats are heavily contested and the Singh father-son duo could spoil the BJP’s prospects. But we are confident that we will resolve the issue of Kullu seat. This time in Himachal, both the BJP and the Congress are facing the problem of rebels contesting as independents, who can change the equation in the Himachal Pradesh elections.
