Taking strict action, the Uttarakhand Police has registered an FIR against a saint from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly giving a ‘hate speech’ in Dehradun earlier this week. Yati Ramswaroopanand Giri of Shiv Shakti Dham in Dasna, Ghaziabad district has been booked for promoting enmity between different groups. A video went viral on social media in which he was allegedly giving a speech targeting the minority community.

In the viral video, he can allegedly be heard saying that Hindus should keep weapons to protect women and children from members of the minority community. According to a statement issued by the police in Dehradun, they have taken suo motu cognizance of the viral video and registered a case against Giri. They said further investigation is underway.

Dehradun SSP Ajay Singh said, “Our social media monitoring team found that the words used in the speech were against (particular) caste/religion and fall under the category of hate speech. As per Supreme Court directions, whenever the police comes to know about hate speech, it immediately registers an FIR. Hence, after investigation, an FIR has been registered on the complaint of Sub-Inspector Devendra Gupta.”

According to the complaint, Giri had made the alleged hate speech at a press conference held at the Press Club in Dehradun on Tuesday. He announced that the World Parliament of Religions, which is to be attended by many saints, will be held from December 14 to December 21 this year. He reportedly said that they would discuss making Uttarakhand ‘Islam-free’ during the parliament. He also said that the minority community is producing a lot more children than the majority community and Hindus have become ‘impotent’.
