Station Master Job Profile
The position of ASM (Assistant Station Master) has now changed to SM (Station Master) which is considered a good change under Indian Railways. Usually there are four station masters at each station, who work in shifts. The primary job is to take care of the train movement at its station on time and without any extra hindrance.
The job of Station Master seems quite easy, routine and non-hectic to many, but it takes constant effort and brain exercise to make any train journey comfortable, safe and fast. It is the Station Master who ensures the smooth running of trains and is responsible for the safety of passengers and staff.
In case of any medical emergency it is the responsibility of the Station Master to attend to it at the earliest and provide proper medical care in coordination with the medical officers. Apart from these, a SM should co-ordinate with the Station Manager and issue caution orders to every train stopping at the station. Sometimes, in smaller stations, Station Masters are also entrusted with business functions like ticket/parcel booking, reservation etc. A station master also plays the role of manager at his station and takes care of rescue operations in case of any emergency.
Railway Station Master Career Growth and Promotion
Promotion in Indian Railways is based on vacancies, which makes it very untimely. There is no hard and fast rule for getting promoted. However, if an employee is not promoted for more than 10 years, the Railways advances the grade pay of that employee along with arrears till the present day. But we cannot say that there is no promotion late or early but promotion is sure.
The first post that a Station Master gets after promotion is the Station Superintendent (SS).
The second is of the Assistant Operation Manager (AOM).
And finally, promotion to Divisional Operations Manager (DOM).
