Due to continuous torrential rains in Nepal, floods and landslides have caused huge devastation. Due to this, 60 people have lost their lives in the last 24 hours and 36 are injured. According to the Kathmandu Post report, many people are still missing. Hundreds of people trapped in flood waters have been rescued. There have been 34 deaths due to floods and landslides in the Kathmandu Valley. 16 deaths were reported from Lalitpur, 5 from Bhaktapur, 2 from Sindhupalchok and Panchthar, Dhankuta and Sindhuli.
According to a statement issued by the police, almost all highways, including those connecting the rest of the country to the capital Kathmandu, have been disrupted due to the disasters. The Government of Nepal has announced that more than 20,000 police officers have been deployed for rescue operations. Many people have been injured and many are missing due to the landslide. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Bishvo Adhikari, 32 people have died and 12 are still missing in the three districts of Kathmandu Valley alone. Rescue workers have successfully rescued 1,053 people trapped in flood waters within the valley.
1,244 houses submerged in flood water
According to the official, 4 concrete houses have been destroyed and 1244 houses have been submerged due to floods in the valley. The report said that Nepal has received more than average rainfall this year during the monsoon season. The official said that main highways have been blocked at 44 places across the country. Meanwhile, Caretaker Prime Minister and Urban Development Minister Prakash Man Singh has called an emergency meeting of various ministers, including the Home Minister, Home Secretary and heads of security agencies. They have been instructed to speed up the search and rescue operations. There was power cut in Kathmandu throughout the day due to disruption of main power lines due to floods, but power supply was restored in the evening.
