I have slept on the floor of a government hospital; Chief Justice Chandrachud said during the hearing on the Kolkata case

Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: The hearing on the Kolkata rape and murder case is still going on in the Supreme Court today. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognizance of the matter. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is hearing the case. During this, the CJI mentioned an incident related to himself and said that he too has slept on the floor of a government hospital.

“Please assure the doctors that we are concerned about them that they have to work for 36 hours. We all have family members and relatives who have gone to government hospitals. I have slept on the floor of a government hospital when someone in the family was sick. We have gone through this phase, we have seen doctors working for 36 hours,” the CJI said.

The Supreme Court said that it sympathizes with all the patients coming to government hospitals. Resident doctors of AIIMS Nagpur told the Supreme Court that they are being harassed for protesting against the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The Supreme Court asked the protesting doctors to return to work first and assured the lawyer of AIIMS Nagpur that no adverse action will be taken after they return to work.

The Supreme Court termed the delay by the Kolkata Police in recording the unnatural death in its records as extremely disturbing. The Supreme Court directed the Kolkata Police officer who registered the first FIR regarding the rape-murder incident to appear at the next hearing and explain at what time it was registered.

The CBI told the Supreme Court that the state police first told the victim’s parents that it was a case of suicide, then said it was murder. The CBI also told the Supreme Court that the victim’s friend suspected concealment of facts in the case and insisted on videography.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court that the most shocking fact is that the FIR was registered at 11:45 pm, after the cremation of the deceased victim.
