Investigation ordered by IAF
The Indian Air Force has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the technical problem that led to the incident. The Indian Air Force said in an ex post, “Due to a technical fault, an air store of an Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter aircraft was inadvertently released near Pokhran Firing Range area today. The Pokhran Firing Range, located in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, is an important site for testing and training exercises of the Indian Armed Forces. The range has been historically important for various military operations, including missile testing, gunnery exercises and testing of nuclear devices. It serves as an important facility for the Indian Army to conduct live-fire training and evaluate the performance of weapon systems.
Accidental firing of Brahmos missile
The recent incident at the Pokhran firing range is similar to a more serious incident in March 2022 when a BrahMos missile was accidentally fired from India into Pakistan. On March 9, 2022, the missile crashed at Mian Channu in Khanewal district of Punjab, Pakistan.
