New Delhi: With the launch of Module-2 of the International Classification of Diseases-11 (ICD-11), a system of uniform morbidity codes has now been implemented across the world in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha (ASU) medicines. This will reduce the problems of the patients. This was also mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mann Ki Baat on January 28. Describing it as an achievement of India, he said that this will reduce the problems of patients who resort to traditional medical systems. This system has been implemented with the cooperation of the World Health Organization.

In fact, data and terminology related to diseases based on Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani systems will now be included in the ICD-11 classification of the World Health Organization. This will bring uniformity in the code of terminology defining diseases and will be very convenient.

World Health Organization launched

ICD-11, Chapter 26, Module 2 was recently launched by the World Health Organization at a function held in Delhi. Referring to this in Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi had said – ‘There must be many people among you who get help from Ayurveda, Siddha or Unani system of medicine for treatment. But their patients face problems when they go to any other doctor of the same method. In these medical systems, the same language is not used for disease names, treatments and medicines. Every doctor writes the name of the disease and methods of treatment in his own way. This sometimes makes it very difficult for other doctors to understand.

Solution to decades long problem

The launch of ICD-11 Module 2 has solved this problem to a great extent and the PM said, ‘The solution to this problem that has been going on for decades has now been found.’ PM Modi said, – I am happy to inform that the Ministry of AYUSH has classified the data and terminology related to Ayurveda, Siddha and Unani medicine. The World Health Organization (WHO) has also helped in this work. Due to the efforts of both, the terminology related to disease and treatment in Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha medicine has been codified. With the help of this coding, now all doctors will write the same language on their prescriptions.

There will be convenience in treatment

PM Modi further said, ‘One advantage of this will be that if you go to another doctor with that slip, then the doctor will get complete information about it from that slip only. That slip will help you in knowing your illness, treatment, what medicines you have been taking, for how long the treatment has been going on, what things you are allergic to, all this. The second benefit will be to those people who are involved in research work.

Will help in research

The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), Module 2 will also help advance research related to ASU. PM Modi had said in his address, ‘Scientists from other countries will also get complete information about diseases, medicines and them. As research increases and many scientists join together, these medical systems will give better results and people’s inclination towards them will increase. He expressed confidence that doctors associated with AYUSH systems will adopt this coding as soon as possible. International Classification of Diseases (ICD) by WHO for member countries like India lists various communicable (e.g. malaria, TB, etc.) and non-communicable ( non communicable) (diabetes, cancer, kidney disease etc.) is the main means of collecting disease and mortality data. The groundwork for the ICD-11 Module 2 initiative was launched during the Ayurveda Day celebrations 2017. At the same time “National AYUSH Morbidity and Standardized Terminology Electronic (NAMASTE) Portal (https://namstp.ayush.gov.in/) was launched by the Prime Minister. He also inaugurated the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi. Also did.

The launch of ICD-11 Module2 will also help in medical insurance coverage, creation of insurance packages and insurance portability between insurance companies across the world. Also, medical value travel for treatment through AYUSH in India will be encouraged. Union Minister for AYUSH and Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that under the guidance of the Honorable Prime Minister, we all have achieved global successes like ICD-11 Module 2. Due to his tireless efforts, the traditional medical system of India is gaining global recognition today. His address through ‘Mann Ki Baat’ is going to increase our energy and inspiration. We have to develop AYUSH as a fundamental system of global health. Secretary AYUSH Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said the AYUSH ministry will prepare a future strategy for public healthcare based on ICD-11, Module 2. We will implement it at national and international level also. The indexing of traditional medical disease names into ICD-11 will be a milestone in the creation of a uniform global convention.
