If an embarrassing situation arises for India then… Yunus government advisor’s big statement on Sheikh Hasina’s return

Mohammad Tauhid Hussain, foreign affairs advisor in the interim government of Bangladesh, has made a big statement regarding Sheikh Hasina’s return from India. He said that if such a demand is made by the Bangladesh government, then India will have to pay attention to it. He also said that if this creates an embarrassing situation for India, then India will have to handle it.

It is worth noting that after the anti-government protests reached their peak on August 5 in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina had to resign from the post of Prime Minister and leave the country and go to India. Hasina’s presence in India for more than three weeks has fueled speculation in Bangladesh. However, India has not yet given any direct answer regarding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina.

“Sheikh Hasina is living in Delhi, in India… I am not the right person to answer (about her return). If a request comes from there (Bangladesh’s Home Ministry and Law Ministry) then we will have to ask them to send her back to Bangladesh. If a demand comes from there, and it creates an embarrassing situation for the Indian government, then India will have to look into it. I think the Indian government knows that and I am sure they will take care of it,” Bangladesh’s foreign affairs adviser Mohammad Tauhid Hossain was quoted as saying by Reuters.

A day earlier, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday that New Delhi’s relations with Dhaka have been “fluctuating” since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 and it is natural for India to adopt a stance in line with the current government’s stance. In his address at the launch of a book here, Jaishankar also stressed that India has to look at the “reciprocity of interests”. He said that for any country in the world, neighbors are “always a puzzle”, and are also “major powers”.
