The excavation of the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh has been completed amid India-China tensions over the Line of Actual Control in Eastern Ladakh. This tunnel is very important strategically as it will make it easier for the Indian Army to reach the LAC in all-weather and deliver the necessary equipment. Also time will be saved as well. In Arunachal Pradesh, a few days ago, Chinese soldiers crossed the LAC and entered Indian territory and they also had a skirmish with Indian soldiers. While China already has good roads till the LAC, now India is also working to improve the infrastructure on the border rapidly.
Sela Pass (Pass) is on the 317 km long Balipara-Chahardwar-Tawang road. It is at an altitude of 13,800 feet. It is the only road connecting West Kameng, East Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh with other parts of the country. After the completion of the work on the Sela Tunnel, there will be all-weather movement here and this area will not be cut off from other parts of the country during snowfall. This is the only road leading to LAC. Helicopters are also unable to fly in bad weather and when this road is open in all weather, it will give great relief to the local people as well as the Indian Army.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the Sela Tunnel Project in the year 2019 to facilitate all-weather road connectivity to Tawang via the Balipara-Chardwar-Tawang road. On Thursday, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh pressed the button to open the main tube through the blast. This indicates that the excavation of the tunnel is complete. On completion of the tunnel work, this more than 1.5 km long tunnel will be one of the longest double lane road tunnel in the world at an altitude of 13,800 feet. This tunnel made of latest technology will not be affected even in snowfall.
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that the Cell Tunnel of Arunachal Pradesh will play an important role in strengthening national security and ensuring socio-economic development of the region. He said that Border Roads Organization (BOO)’s efforts to strengthen the border infrastructure have increased the operational readiness of the armed forces, boosted tourism in remote areas and created employment opportunities for the local population. He said that this state-of-the-art tunnel would prove to be a lifeline not only for Tawang but for the entire state.
