Second nuclear-armed submarine ready

New Delhi: The country’s second nuclear submarine INS Arighat is fully ready to give new strength to the Indian Navy and further increase its firepower. INS Arighat or S-3 will be handed over to the Indian Navy by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh today. This submarine was launched in 2017 and since then its testing was going on. Now it will be commissioned. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will hand over this submarine to the Navy in Visakhapatnam. Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, Indian Strategic Command Chief Vice Admiral Suraj Berry and top officials of DRDO will attend the program. After its official induction, India will have two SSBN nuclear submarines. Earlier in the year 2016, the indigenous nuclear submarine ‘INS Arihant’ was included in the war fleet.

Equipped with a missile with a range of 750 kilometers

The word Arighat is derived from Sanskrit language. In Sanskrit, it means the destroyer of enemies. This second nuclear submarine of India has been built in the shipyard located in Visakhapatnam. The Arihant submarine is equipped with the K-15 ballistic missile (nuclear) which can strike up to 750 kilometers from the sea. Not only this, this most modern submarine of the Indian Navy will also be equipped with the K-4 missile which can strike up to 4000 kilometers.

The submarine weighs about 6,000 tons

The weight of this nuclear submarine is about six thousand tonnes. The length of Arighat is about 110 meters and its width is 11 meters. INS ‘Arighat’ will become a part of the Strategic Force Command and due to being associated with the Strategic Force, no official information has been shared by the Navy about the commissioning of this nuclear submarine.

The Arighat submarine is quite advanced

Defence sources have said that the country’s second nuclear submarine ‘INS Arighat’ is fully prepared to protect India’s maritime borders. This is India’s second indigenous nuclear submarine but ‘Arighat’ is much more advanced than its class Arihant in many respects. At the same time, the construction of the Indian Army’s third nuclear submarine ‘INS Aridaman’ is also underway. After its construction, India’s war fleet will have 16 diesel (SSK) conventional submarines and India will also have three nuclear submarines (SSBN).

It is worth noting that earlier India’s SSN i.e. nuclear power submarine was sent back to Russia in the year 2022 after the ten-year lease ended. In the year 2004, India launched Advanced Technology Vessel (ATV) to build four SSBN (‘Ship, Submersible, Ballistic, Nuclear’) submarines. A fourth submarine of this project (code name S-4) is also under construction. (Input-IANS)
