Israel Attacks Hezbollah: Israel, which is fighting a war with Hamas in Gaza, is also breaking the back of Hezbollah. Israel has heavily bombed Hezbollah’s weapons depots. The Israeli army said on Wednesday that it bombed Hezbollah’s weapons storage facilities in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley overnight. This is Israel’s latest attack on a weapons depot in a major stronghold of the powerful Iranian-backed organization. The airstrike came a few hours after Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that attacking ammunition depots in Lebanon is a preparation for any possible eventuality.
Security sources in Lebanon could not immediately confirm that an arms depot was targeted on Tuesday. The sources said the attack was carried out in a residential area near the eastern city of Baalbek in the Bekaa, an area mainly inhabited by Shiite Muslims from whom Hezbollah draws its support. At least two people were killed and 19 wounded in the air strikes, according to security sources, but it was not immediately clear whether those killed were civilians or militants. Another Israeli airstrike on Wednesday hit a car on the outskirts of the southern port city of Sidon, killing a member of the armed wing of the Palestinian group Fatah.
Retaliating, Hezbollah said it had avenged the attack on the Bekaa region by firing Katyusha rockets at an Israeli military logistics site in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Hezbollah and the Israeli army have been engaged in a parallel battle to the Gaza war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas for the past 10 months. It has now taken a more fierce form, due to which it has given rise to fears of a wider Middle East conflict. Israel has regularly bombed Hezbollah fighters and rocket launch sites in southern Lebanon. According to Reuters, more than 600 people have been killed in Lebanon since the start of the clashes last October, including more than 400 Hezbollah fighters and 132 civilians.
Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli army said it had targeted a weapons depot used by Hezbollah militants in an airstrike. Lebanon’s state news agency said at least 10 Syrian civilians, including two children, were killed in the incident. Another airstrike late Monday night hit a Hezbollah weapons depot in the Bekaa region.
