ISRO: CE20 cryogenic engine test successful for LVM 3’s next mission

Highlights

The CE-20 cryogenic engine is the engine of ISRO’s heaviest rocket.
ISRO said that this engine has been made for the LVM3-M3 mission.
Under which the next 36 satellites of OneWeb India-1 will be launched.

Bangalore. The CE-20 cryogenic engine was flight tested at the ‘High Altitude Test’ Center of the Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu. The CE20 cryogenic engine is the engine of ISRO’s heaviest rocket. ISRO said that this engine has been made for the LVM3-M3 mission. Under which the next 36 satellites of OneWeb India-1 will be launched. Sources said that ISRO’s commercial arm New Space India Limited (NSIL) can launch these satellites of London-based satellite communications company ‘OneWeb’ early next year.

OneWeb’s first 36 satellites were launched by NSIL on 23 October from Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota. A few days later, the CE-20 engine was flight tested on Friday. LVM3 is ISRO’s heaviest rocket and it is capable of sending satellites up to four tonnes into geosynchronous orbit. The cryogenic upper stage (C25 stage) of the LVM3 rocket is powered by a CE-20 engine. This engine produces 186.36 kN of thrust in vacuum. The main purpose of this test before the rocket’s flight was to verify the robustness of the hardware, to assess the performance of all its systems.

Simultaneously, the CE20 cryogenic engine for flight operations had to be tuned to meet the requirements of the mission. Analysis of the test data confirmed the satisfactory performance of the CE20 cryogenic engine system. Now this engine will be assembled in the C25 flight stage being prepared for the LVM3 M3 rocket. Earlier on Sunday, ISRO had launched 36 satellites of OneWeb India-1 under its LVM-3 rocket. This is a huge success of the Indian Space Agency in the world space market.
