New Delhi: The Assam government is going to take action against child marriage on a war footing from today. Police has started action in more than 4000 FIRs registered against child marriage ban in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma government has recently issued an order to take action under the POCSO Act on marriages below the age of 14 years. The effect of action against child marriage is also visible now. Assam Police on Thursday launched action against people involved in child marriages across the state on the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Police said that it arrested at least 7 people involved in child marriage cases from Nagaon and Morigaon districts as part of the crackdown on Thursday evening.

Police said that five accused were picked up from Nagaon district. He was arrested by the Batadraba police station in the district. An officer of Batadraba police station said that we have arrested five people involved in child marriage. Let us tell you that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday that the Assam government is firm on its resolve to end the evil of child marriage. Referring to the recent registration of 4,004 cases of child marriage in the state, he also said that ‘action on these cases’ would be started from February 3.

On the occasion of interaction with the faculty members of Nagaon Medical College, the CM of Assam said that thousands of people involved in child marriage will be arrested. In the next six-seven days, thousands of youths or men who marry girls below the age of 18 will be arrested. Anyone who has married a minor before or now will be caught. He said that anyone marrying a girl below the age of 14 will be arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
