BJP and TMC are face to face over the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a second letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. In this letter, Mamata Banerjee has demanded strict central laws and harsh punishment for heinous crimes like rape and murder. A few hours after the Chief Minister wrote the letter, the central government insisted that the existing laws are sufficiently stringent to deal with violence and crimes against women.
48,600 rape cases pending in Bengal
Union Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi has responded by writing a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She said, ‘Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) are specially made to deal with rape and POCSO Act cases. Despite 48,600 rape and POCSO cases pending in West Bengal, the state has not made additional 11 FTSCs operational, which can be special POCSO courts as per the requirement of the state or combined FTSCs dealing with both rape and POCSO cases.’
The information is factually incorrect
Along with this, the Union Minister said that as can be seen, the information given in your letter in this regard is factually incorrect and it seems that this is a step taken by the State to hide the delay in making the Fast Track Special Court (FTSC) operational.
The government made strict laws
Union Minister Annapurna Devi said that the laws made by the Central Government to deal with violence and crime against women are comprehensive and quite stringent. The Union Minister said, ‘If the state government follows the central laws exactly, it will definitely help in strengthening the criminal justice system. Crimes will have to face severe consequences.
