Kanyakumari: Lok Sabha elections are going to be held in the country after a few weeks and all the parties have started implementing their respective strategies. Under these elections, the people of the country will elect their representatives and send them to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament. Elections will be held on a total of 543 Lok Sabha seats and the party or alliance which gets 272 or more seats will get a chance to form the government. Kanyakumari is one of these 543 Lok Sabha seats, about which we are going to tell you.
There is a close contest on Kanyakumari seat
Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat is made up of 6 assembly seats. The names of these seats are Kanyakumari, Nagercoil, Colachel, Padmanabhapuram, Vilavancode and Killiyur. Of these, Kanyakumari assembly seat is held by AIADMK, while Nagercoil seat is with BJP. DMK has an MLA from Padmanabhapuram and the remaining three seats are with Congress. If seen this way, no single party has a monopoly on the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat.
BJP had won in 2014 and Congress had won in 2019.
While BJP candidate Radhakrishnan had won the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat in 2014, in 2019 Congress leader Vasanth Kumar had won the seat. After the death of Vasanthkumar in August 2020, by-election was held on this seat in 2021 in which Congress leader Vijayakumar defeated BJP’s Radhakrishnan. Vijayakumar is the son of the late Kanyakumari seat MP Vasanthakumar and it is believed that he also got the benefit of sympathy wave in the elections.
Communal polarization is seen in elections
Communal polarization is also seen in Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat and here 48.6 percent of the population are Hindus and 46.8 percent voters are Christians. Muslim and Christian voters together cross the 51 percent mark here and play an important role in making a candidate victorious or defeated. This is the reason why there is often a close contest on this seat.
NDA government was formed in 2014 and 2019
In 2014, Lok Sabha elections were held in a total of 9 phases from 7 April to 12 May. Under these elections, the people elected their representatives for the 16th Lok Sabha. The results of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections were declared on 16 May. At the same time, in 2019, the general elections were held in a total of 7 phases from 11 April to 19 May and the results of the elections came on 23 May. In both the elections, NDA under the leadership of BJP had registered a landslide victory and Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister.
