Tharoor definitely in race, but never a favorite
Voting for the post of Congress President will be held on October 17. The results will be declared on October 19. However, the whole equation seems to be changing with Mallikarjun Kharge entering the race. The way his name has been proposed in the Congress says a lot in itself. Of course, Tharoor has been in this match from the beginning. But, he was never considered a favorite. Not even when there was speculation about his collision with Gehlot and not even now when a Congressman like Mallikarjun Kharge has stood in front of him. 30 Congress leaders have proposed Kharge’s name for the post of Congress President. The names of those who were speculated to contest the elections have also spoken of supporting Kharge. These include Digvijay Singh.
Not even G-23 leader with Tharoor
The interesting thing is that even Manish Tewari and Anand Sharma have spoken of supporting Kharge for the post of Congress President. It is necessary to mention Manish Tewari and Anand Sharma separately here because both are leaders of G-23 group of Congress. This is the same group of leaders who wrote a letter to Congress President Sonia Gandhi in 2020. In this letter, the group had advocated for a radical change in the organization. He had also questioned the Congress high command. Tharoor also belongs to the same group. Manish Tewari and Anand Sharma have supported the nomination of Mallikarjun Kharge instead of their group members. Tiwari and Sharma reached the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office in Delhi to support Kharge’s nomination.
are friends but not together
Tiwari said he supported Kharge’s nomination. Shashi Tharoor was, is and will be his friend. Those who have given their whole life in Congress are here. Digvijay Singh has withdrawn from the candidature. It would be great if there is a consensus. Congress leader Salman Khurshid said that Shashi Tharoor has tried to strengthen the tradition. Both have said that this contest will strengthen the Congress.
On Friday, Digvijay Singh dropped his name from the race for Congress President. He has also spoken of supporting Kharge. He said that he cannot even think of contesting elections against a senior leader like Kharge. Singh is the second Congress leader to have taken his name out of the race. Ashok Gehlot has done this before him. Gehlot withdrew his name after the political turmoil in Rajasthan. Gehlot has also proposed Kharge’s name. Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda has welcomed Kharge’s nomination.
kharge’s path is clear
It is clear from the stand of most senior Congress leaders that the road for Kharge to become the chief of the party will not be very difficult. He will be very heavy on Shashi Tharoor. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday filed his nomination for the post of party president. He then said that he has a vision to strengthen the party, which will bring about ‘change’. After filing his nomination, Tharoor said on the question of contesting Kharge that he is Bhishma Pitamah of Congress. This is a friendly match. They are not enemies or rivals. He doesn’t disrespect them. But, I will express my views.
Both Tharoor and Kharge belong to South India. At the same time, most of the party’s representatives who will vote in the elections are from Hindi speaking states. Kharge, the leader of Karnataka, is the choice of the Gandhi family. This is also one of the reasons why he has got such strong support. Ashok Gehlot was also considered as a favorite in comparison to Tharoor.
