New Delhi. In view of the Surat court’s decision against Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party is going to hold a meeting with other opposition leaders in New Delhi today. This meeting of opposition parties is expected to start at 10 am. AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh told a press conference on Thursday that after the meeting, the Congress would also take out a protest march from Parliament to Vijay Chowk. At 11:30 a.m. or sometime in the afternoon, all opposition parties will march from Parliament to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Congress said that it has sought time from President Draupadi Murmu to present its case.
Along with this, the Congress has decided to protest in Delhi and other states on Monday (March 27) over the so-called ‘wrong’ verdict of the Surat court against Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi. Jairam Ramesh said that ‘we will protest on this issue in Delhi and other states on Monday. This matter is not only a legal issue, but also a serious political issue related to the future of democracy in the country. The Congress accused the Modi government of doing vendetta politics. Ramesh said that ‘this is another prime example of the politics of vengeance and intimidation of the Modi government. We will fight legally as well as politically. We will not bow down or be afraid of this kind of politics.

Significantly, the court of Surat has sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in jail. Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to two years in prison in a criminal defamation case filed over his ‘Modi surname’ remark in 2019. However, the court granted him bail and gave him 30 days to appeal against the sentence. Rahul Gandhi had reportedly said at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections that ‘how can all thieves have Modi as their surname?’ A complaint was filed by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi against his remarks.
