Law and Justice Minister Kiren Rijiju gave this information to the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. Citing data from the Supreme Court website and the National Judicial Data Grid (NZDG), he said 72,062 cases are pending in the Supreme Court as on July 1, 2022.

Rijiju informed that 59,45,709 cases are pending in various High Courts as on 15th July 2022. He said that as on July 15, 2022, 4,19,79,353 cases are pending in various district and subordinate courts of the country.

He said that the disposal of cases pending in the courts comes under the jurisdiction of the judiciary and no time limit has been fixed for disposal of different types of cases by the respective courts. The minister said that the government has no role in the disposal of cases in the courts and timely disposal of cases depends on several factors.
