Neeraj Chopra showed the power of ‘six’, broke his Paris Olympics record in Diamond League; yet this dream remained unfulfilled

After the Paris Olympics, India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was seen in action for the first time in the Lausanne Diamond League 2024. Neeraj performed impressively and threw the javelin 89.49 meters away, which is the second best throw of his career. He broke his own record of Paris Olympics. Neeraj won the silver medal in Paris with a throw of 89.45 meters, which was then the season’s best. Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem is not participating in the event, who won gold with an Olympic record of 92.97 meters. The Diamond League final will be played next month.

26-year-old Chopra did not look in good rhythm till the fourth round. He was in fourth place till the fourth round. He threw the javelin 85.58 meters in the fifth attempt and reached third place. Neeraj showed his strength in the sixth and final attempt and gave the best performance of the season. He threw 89.49 meters, which was slightly better than the Paris Olympics. Neeraj was in danger of missing the sixth throw but the fifth round attempt saved him. After five rounds, only the top three get a chance for the last attempt.

Two-time world champion and Paris Olympics bronze medalist Anderson Peters threw 90.61 meters and secured first place. The javelin thrower from Grenada made a monster throw in the second round. Julian Weber of Germany finished third with 87.08 meters. Let us tell you that Neeraj was the Diamond League champion in the year 2022. He finished second last year. Neeraj is not fully fit at the moment. He is suffering from a groin injury.

This dream of Neeraj remained unfulfilled

Although Neeraj threw the season’s best throw, his dream of touching the 90 meter mark remained unfulfilled. He missed the 90 meter mark by just 51 cm. However, Neeraj is happy with his performance. He said after the competition, “Initially I did not feel good but I am happy with my throw, especially the second best throw of my career in my last attempt. The beginning was difficult but the comeback was really good. I showed fighting spirit and enjoyed it.”

Neeraj’s first attempt was 82.10 and second 82.10 meters. He threw the javelin 83.21 meters in the third attempt and 83.21 meters in the fourth. The Indian javelin thrower said that despite the throw not going as expected initially, he kept his courage up. Neeraj said, “Even though my initial throw was around 80-83 meters, I worked hard in the last two attempts and came back strongly and finished. It is important to stay mentally strong and fight while competing at this high level.”
