Now sugar mills, ethanol units have to get process verification report from technical institute – Fast Hindi News

New Delhi: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has issued new rules addressing the manufacture of ethanol from sugar and grain-based feedstocks in an effort to simplify the process of distillery verification.

As per the new guidelines announced on Friday, sugar factories and ethanol units will have to obtain a process verification report from the National Sugar Institute (NSI), Kanpur, Vasantdada Sugar Institute (VSI), Pune, or any other technical institute. Technical Institute nominated by the State Government during the sugar season/ethanol year 2022-23. If no such verification was done earlier, then such verification will be necessary for subsequent years.

Additionally, within a fortnight after conducting the on-site verification, the verification agencies must send a copy of the verification report to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Department of Food and Public Distribution, and the Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oils. They should also detail the shortfall in sugar recovery due to the shift to ethanol.

Both ethanol distilleries using sugar or molasses and those using grain are covered by the published criteria.

“Ethanol produced through various routes has to be certified with unique serial number by the concerned State Excise Department or any authority specified by the State Government. for proper identification. Such certificate for food grains shall clearly indicate the type of grain used i.e. maize or corn, damaged food grains or excess rice from FCI (Food Corporation of India),” read the guidelines. It states that the quality of ethanol produced by any route should conform to the desired specifications as per the Bureau of Indian Standards.

According to the food ministry, these rules will allow distilleries to determine the quantity of ethanol produced from different sources, such as B-heavy, C-heavy, cane syrup and various grain-based ethanol.
