Odisha: Stopped from burying the dead body of Christian in the cemetery, 300 people of the village kept on guard overnight

Bhubaneswar. In a shocking and strange incident in Odisha, more than 300 tribal people stood guard overnight in the village graveyard only because the body of a Christian could not be buried in it. This incident happened on Friday from Gudibdana village of Bhatra tribe under Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district. The deceased has been identified as Jitu Bhatra (65). Who had converted to Christianity many years ago and died on Friday evening.

According to a report in The Hindu, when his two sons tried to bury his body in the village graveyard, the villagers decided not to allow him to perform the last rites. To ensure that the family of the deceased did not manage to bury the body in the village, all the men of Gudibdana village patrolled the village. Due to this, the relatives of the deceased could not take the body out of the house for 24 hours.

Gan Bhatra, a resident of the village said that according to our tradition, outsiders or people of other religions are not allowed to perform the last rites or burial in the cremation ground of our village. This family had refused to give up Christianity, so we did not allow them to bury the dead body. Ultimately the administration intervened in the matter. The family was requested to move 5 km from the village. Bury the body in the distant Pujariguda graveyard. However, the local people once again opposed this move. Finally the body was taken to a church near Nabarangpur, the district headquarters. The tribals of the area follow the practice of both burial and cremation for the last rites.
