Bhubaneswar: People belonging to Scheduled Tribes in Odisha will now be able to sell their lands to non-tribal communities. However, under the new provision, it has also been provided that they cannot sell their entire land. The Odisha Cabinet on Tuesday decided to amend a law. After this amendment made by Naveen Patnaik’s government, now Scheduled Tribe (ST) people living in scheduled areas will be able to sell their land to non-tribals with the permission of the state government.
‘A person from ST community will not be able to sell the entire land’
Giving information about this, Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena said that under the new provision, a person from the Scheduled Tribe community cannot sell his entire land because in that situation the person may become landless or homeless. Odisha Chief Secretary said the move is likely to boost industries in the state. After the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Jena said that following the recommendations of the Scheduled Tribes Advisory Council, in view of the wider interest of the people of ST community, it has been decided to amend the Odisha Scheduled Areas Immovable Property Transfer Regulation, 1956. .
This law was also amended in 2002
Jena said that after some amendments were made in this law in 2002, ST category citizens were allowed to transfer immovable property only to tribals. Due to this provision many people of the community were facing difficulties. Before 2002, no land of any member of the Scheduled Tribe community could be sold. The main objective of this rule was that no powerful person could buy the land of ST community people by intimidating them.
