Its religious rituals were performed by the priests of Tamil Nadu. At the time of independence, when it was handed over to Nehru ji, the media gave it coverage. Sengol is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘sanku’, which means ‘conch’. The conch shell was a sacred object in Hinduism, and was often used as a symbol of sovereignty.
