New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted Indians on the occasion of Chhath Puja.

PM Modi tweeted, ‘Heartfelt greetings to all the countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Chhath dedicated to the worship of Sun God and nature. With the aura of Lord Bhaskar and the grace of Chhathi Maiya, may everyone’s life be always bright, this is the only wish. Today is the third day of Chhath Puja, which is known as “Sandhya Arghya”.

In India and Nepal in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, Chhath Puja is a traditional Hindu festival that dates back thousands of years.

The four-day festival honors Surya and Shashti Devi and is also known as Surya Shashthi, Chhath, Mahaparva, Chhath Parva, Dala Puja, Pratihara and Dala Chhath.

Women fast as part of the ritual for the welfare of their sons and the happiness of their families. They also offer Arghya to Lord Surya and Chhathi Maiya.

The main day and last day of worship is celebrated on 31 October, which is a Monday, ending the four-day holiday, which began on Friday, 28 October. People observe Chhath and follow strict procedures every day.

Chhath is one such ritual that seeks Sun God’s blessings for a long, happy and prosperous life. It is said that many diseases and disorders are cured by sunlight. It has a curative function that can help the sick. Taking a dip in the holy river is believed to provide some therapeutic benefits. The primary goal of Chhath Puja is to help the devotees achieve spiritual harmony and mental purity. The celebration requires maintaining the highest level of ritual purity.

People celebrate Chhath Puja by following many practices. The name of the first day of Chhath Puja is Kaddu Bhaat or Bath Khai. Parvaitin (primary worshiper who observes fast) prepares sattvik kaddu bhaat with pulses and offers it as bhog to the deity in the afternoon on this particular day. Kharna, or the second day of Chhath Puja, is celebrated. Parvati prepares pudding of bread and rice to offer to “Chandradev” as bhog (moon god) on this day. A full day of fasting without water is observed on the third major day of Chhath Puja. Offering Arghya to the setting sun is the primary rite of the day. On the last day of Chhath, the fourth, Dashari Arghya was observed.
