Ayodhya. The construction work of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple is in progress in Ayodhya. Two large Shaligram stone slabs, which are likely to be used in the construction of Lord Ram’s idol in the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, reached Ayodhya from Gorakhnath Temple in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. The stones brought from the Kali Gandaki river in Nepal are kept at the Ram Sevak Puram (storage area for the construction material of the Ram temple) in Ayodhya.

According to ANI, Champat Rai, General Secretary of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra, said that the stones will be open for worship on February 2 at 10:30 pm. According to Hindustan Times, about 100 officials of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and a five-member delegation from Nepal have brought this big Shaligram stone along with stones believed to be centuries old.

Before reaching Ayodhya, the way these twin stone stones weighing several tons were displayed at many places, it can also be understood in the context of the ‘Ramcharitmanas’ controversy. Stones weighing 26 tonnes and 14 tonnes were loaded on two trailers for the journey. On one hand, the opposition is trying to revive the politics of Mandal by raising questions on Ramcharitmanas and demanding census of backward castes. The BJP, on the other hand, is hoping to keep the spirit of Hindutva strong through the Ram temple and its associated symbols.

Historically, ‘Shila Pujan’, ‘Kar Seva’ events have been successful mechanisms to weaken caste consciousness and build Hindu identity. Sources said that initially UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was also expected to reach Ayodhya on Thursday. However, it is believed that he was absent from the Global Investors Summit due to the greater focus on ‘development’. With the Ram temple likely to be opened by January next year, it will be an important issue in the 2024 elections. (With inputs from Pranshu Mishra)
