Rapid action on child marriage in Assam, more than 1,800 arrested so far, Posco Act will apply if the girl is younger than 14 years

Child Marriage: Police has launched a campaign regarding child marriage in Assam. The Assam Police has so far arrested 1,800 people as part of a massive drive against child marriage. Giving information about the police action, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the action will continue in the future as well. Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of a program here that the campaign was started across the state from Friday morning and it will continue for the next three-four days.

The state cabinet had decided on January 23 that those guilty of child marriage would be arrested and a massive awareness campaign would also be launched. In less than a fortnight after this announcement, the police registered 4,004 cases of child marriage. The Chief Minister said that the campaign is going on. He said that in the context of more arrests, a clear picture would emerge by evening and the districts where such cases have taken place would also be known.

Arrests made here
It was told that till now maximum 136 arrests have been made in Dhubri, where maximum 370 cases have been registered. After this, 110 arrests have been made in Barpeta and 100 in Nagaon. Those marrying girls below the age of 14 will be booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and those marrying girls aged 14-18 years under the Prevention of Child Marriage Act, 2006 Case will be registered.

CM took the meeting
Let us tell you that people who do child marriage will be arrested and the marriage will be declared illegal. If the age of the boy is also less than 14 years then he will be sent to a reform home as minors cannot be produced in the court. Chief Minister Himanta Sarma had earlier said that a case would also be registered against the priest, qazi and family members involved in such marriages.

The Chief Minister tweeted, “The Assam government is firm in its resolve to end child marriage in the state. Assam Police has so far registered 4,004 cases (of child marriage) across the state and more police action is expected in the coming days. Action on these cases will start from February 3. I request everyone’s cooperation.” The CM chaired a digital meeting with all Superintendents of Police (SP) in the presence of Director General of Police GP Singh on statewide police action.

CM appealed to remove the evil
CM Himanta Biswa Sarma appealed to the people for cooperation and support to “get rid of this evil”. According to the report of the National Family Health Survey, Assam has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate and child marriage has been the main reason for this. Out of the marriages registered in the state, 31 percent cases are in the prohibited age group. Let us tell you that out of 4,004 cases of child marriage registered recently, maximum number of cases have been registered in Dhubri (370). After this, such cases have been registered in Hojai (255), Udalguri (235), Morigaon (224) and Kokrajhar (204). Hailakandi district of Barak Valley registered only one case of child marriage, while 24 cases were registered in Dima Hasao and 35 in Cachar. (with input from language)
