What is the history of rave parties?
The world became increasingly aware of rave parties in the 80s and 90s. However, such parties had started about 20-30 years before that. Extremely passionate parties in London are called ‘rave’. Drugs like cocaine, hashish, charas, LSD, mephedrone, ecstasy are taken. In most of the rave parties, it is the responsibility of the organizers to provide the drugs. Some rave parties also have ‘chill rooms’ where open sex takes place. Many clubs also provide water and sports drinks to reduce some of the side-effects of drugs, such as dehydration and hyperthermia.

Apart from Goa in India, the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh is famous for its rave parties. Bengaluru has also emerged as a rave hotspot. Rave parties have also been caught in many other Tier-1 cities including Pune, Mumbai. In March 2007, 280 people were arrested from a rave party in Pune. Police raid rave parties in plain clothes. Those found there are prosecuted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 and the Indian Penal Code.
Which drugs are used?
Ecstasy pills at most rave parties in India Cocaine and acid (lysergic acid diethylamide), ketamine, hemp, hashish are used. Most of these drugs are not natural, they are synthesized in chemical labs.
The effect of most drugs lasts for about 8 hours. Cocaine is a powerful nervous system stimulant. Its effect lasts from 15 minutes to an hour. It increases alertness, makes the taker feel that everything is cool. Ecstasy (MDMA) is a popular drug at rave parties. The effect of these drugs increases with music, light and touch.
Risk of overdose to uncontrollable
Most drugs are acquired illegally and are adulterated. Obviously they also have side effects. Minor side effects may include increased heartbeat, restlessness, dizziness, violent behavior. According to a research paper available on NCBI, death is common in severe cases. There are hundreds of reports of drug overdose deaths at rave parties around the world. In 2017, the American newspaper LA Times published stories of 29 people attending rave parties who died of drug overdoses.
