Reservation for SC-ST increased in Karnataka, cabinet sent ordinance to Governor

Karnataka Reservation For SC/ST: The Bommai government of Karnataka approved an ordinance to increase the reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Under this, the SC reservation will increase from 15 to 17 percent and the ST reservation will increase from three to seven percent after the approval of the Governor.

CM Basavaraj Bommai tweeted, “Karnataka Cabinet has taken a historic decision to approve an ordinance to increase reservation for brothers and sisters belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities.” In another tweet, he said that it has been decided to increase the reservation for SCs from 15 to 17 percent and for STs from three to seven percent.

what will happen now?
With this decision, the reservation limit in Karnataka will reach 56 percent, which is above the 50 percent limit set by the Supreme Court in Indira Sawhney’s decision. Therefore, in the coming days, the government will recommend to increase the quota under the 9th Schedule of the Constitution to give it legal protection.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J. C. Madhuswamy said that the government had earlier decided to issue an executive order to increase the quota. We had earlier felt that an executive decision would suffice, but later felt that if it is questioned in court, it may create problems, so we have decided to bring an ordinance.

He said the ordinance justifies the increase in reservation with a detailed note citing various sections of the Constitution. We have emphasized that earlier there were only six castes under Scheduled Castes in Karnataka, to which now 103 castes, nomadic and slum dwellers have been added, hence there has been a huge increase in the population.
