Arun Goel Appointed Election Commissioner: Retired IAS (IAS) officer Arun Goyal was appointed Election Commissioner in the Election Commission on Saturday (19 November).
Goyal has been a 1985 batch Punjab cadre officer. He will be part of the Election Commission along with Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and Election Commissioner Anoop Chandra Pandey. The Union Ministry of Law and Justice informed about Goyal’s appointment. Sushil Chandra retired from the post of Chief Election Commissioner in May. Rajiv Kumar has become the Chief Election Commissioner in his place.
Why there was discussion about resignation
Arun Goyal was about to retire from the post of Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries on 31 December 2022, but he tendered his resignation on 18 November. There was a lot of discussion about this in the bureaucracy.
Goyal has also held the post of Secretary, Ministry of Culture before becoming Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries. He has also held the post of Vice Chairman of Delhi Development Authority.

Appointment amid Gujarat elections
Arun Goyal has been made the Election Commissioner in the midst of the Gujarat Assembly elections to be held next month. Let us tell you that elections are being held in two phases for the 182-member assembly of Gujarat. Voting will be held on December 1 and 5. The result will come on December 8.
