RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said – Everyone living in India is a ‘Hindu’
Darbhanga (Bihar): Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday said that all people living in India are Hindus “by definition” and that diversity has flourished in the country due to its cultural nature. Sarsanghchalak, who was addressing RSS workers in Darbhanga before concluding his four-day tour of Bihar, said people should understand that they are all Hindus because they live in Hindusthan. Bhagwat said, ‘Hinduism is the name of a centuries-old culture to which all the various currents owe their origin. Different branches may arise and seem to be opposite to each other, but they find that all have their beginnings from the same source.’
The Sangh chief said, ‘Seeing oneself in others, seeing women not as objects of lust but as mothers and not coveting the wealth of others defines the Hindu ethos.’ He said, ‘Hindutva is a thread, which connects everyone. All those who consider themselves Hindus are Hindus. Those whose forefathers were Hindus are also Hindus. Such comments of Bhagwat have given rise to controversies in the past. Bhagwat said, ‘Whoever agrees to sing Sanskrit verses in praise of Mother India and is committed to preserving the culture of the land is a Hindu.’

Recalling the power of India’s ancient times, the RSS chief said that the aim of the Sangh is to bring back the lost glory. He said that a conducive social environment is needed to build such a great nation which the Sangh wants to build. The RSS chief said, ‘Our volunteers spend only one hour in the shakhas. The remaining 23 hours of the day are spent in rendering selfless social service, without accepting a single penny of government assistance.’
He said that the Sangh had to come into existence because the society at large was not conscious of its responsibilities and if everyone engaged in selfless service, there would be no need for people to wear the Sangh’s stripes. Bhagwat said that then every citizen would be considered a Swayamsevak in his own right.
