The Russian army carried out large-scale drone and missile attacks in various parts of Ukraine on Monday. During this, energy infrastructure was mainly targeted. Three people were killed in these attacks. This attack started around midnight on Sunday and continued till Monday dawn. This appears to be the biggest attack in the last few weeks. Several groups of Russian drones were moving towards the eastern, northern, southern and central regions of Ukraine. After this, several cruise and ballistic missiles were also fired.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the bombing of his country by Russia overnight and in the morning. He said that more than 100 missiles of different types and about 100 Shahid drones were used in it. The Ukrainian leader said that some people have died and many others have been injured. He also confirmed that the Russian attack has caused great damage to Ukraine’s energy sector. Zelensky said, ‘Like Russia’s previous attacks, this was also disgusting in which important civilian infrastructure was targeted. Western regions from Kharkiv and Kiev to Odessa were targeted.’
Electricity and water supply disrupted in the city
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko said explosions were heard in the capital Kiev. The attack has disrupted power and water supply in the city. In the wake of the attacks, the city administration announced plans to open shelter centers for citizens. Here people can charge their devices and have refreshments during power cuts. Such centers were first opened in Ukraine in the autumn of 2022, when Russia attacked and targeted the country’s energy infrastructure.
Igor Polishchuk, the mayor of the western Ukrainian city of Lutsk, said a multi-storey residential building and unidentified infrastructure were damaged in the attack. One person was killed. Regional chief Serhiy Lisak said another person was killed in the central Dnipropetrovsk region, where the attack triggered several fires. A dozen houses were damaged and two were completely destroyed. Lisak said one person was rescued from the rubble.
‘A fire broke out and several people were injured’
Regional head Ivan Fedorov said one person was also killed in the southeastern, partially occupied region of Zaporizhzhia. According to Fedorov, an infrastructure unit was damaged and caught fire. Regional head Vitaly Kim said three people were injured in the southern Mykolaiv region. He also urged local residents to use civilian facilities in the region. Regional head Ruslan Kravchenko said one person was injured in an attack on the outskirts of the Kiev region. It targeted unspecified infrastructure objects and residences. Ukraine’s private energy company DTEK introduced emergency power cuts. At the same time, it said in an online statement that energy workers across the country work 24/7 to restore light in the homes of Ukrainians.
The attack prompted Polish and NATO air defense units to be activated in the country’s east, the military said. Meanwhile, in Russia, authorities reported Ukrainian drone attacks overnight and early Monday. Four people were injured in Russia’s central region of Saratov, where drones targeted residential buildings in two cities. One drone hit a high-rise residential building in the city of Saratov, local authorities said. A second drone hit a residential building in the city of Engels, where a military airfield is located that has been attacked before. Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 22 Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight and early in the morning in eight Russian regions, including Saratov and Yaroslavl.
