Maharashtra News: In the money laundering case, the decision on the bail application of former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh and Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut can come today (October 21). Both were arrested for money laundering and corruption. Deshmukh also applied for bail in this case after getting bail on October 4 from the Bombay High Court in the money laundering case registered by the ED.
A special court in Mumbai on Thursday (October 20) said it will pronounce on Friday the verdict on the bail application of former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh, who is in judicial custody for alleged corruption and abuse of office. CBI is investigating this matter. Deshmukh, 71, also applied for bail in this case after getting bail on October 4 from the Bombay High Court in a money laundering case registered by the ED.
Anil Deshmukh was arrested in 2021
In Deshmukh’s case, Special CBI Court Judge SH Gwalani reserved the verdict after the arguments of both the parties on the bail application were completed. The NCP leader was arrested on November 2, 2021 and is currently in judicial custody. Deshmukh was admitted to a private hospital for ‘coronary angiography’ last week. Deshmukh was a minister in the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of Maharashtra. Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress were partners in this government.
Deshmukh is currently imprisoned in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail. In March 2021, senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Parambir Singh alleged that the then Home Minister Deshmukh had set a target of recovery of Rs 100 crore per month from restaurants and bars in Mumbai. At the same time, the hearing on the bail plea of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut will continue in the special ED court today. Earlier on Tuesday (October 18), special judge MG Deshpande had extended Raut’s judicial custody till date.
Raut was arrested in Patra Chawl case
Raut’s lawyer Ashok Mundargi had completed his arguments in the case on Tuesday. He told the court that the alleged transactions are from the year 2008 to 2012. He said it has been a decade and the allegation is only of Rs 3.85 crore. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the ED, sought additional time to contest some of the fresh submissions made by Mundargi. While agreeing, the court had extended his judicial custody while fixing the next hearing of the case on October 21, ie today. Raut was arrested by the ED in July this year on charges of money laundering in connection with the Patra Chawl redevelopment project.
