The fire of violence that started after Sheikh Hasina fled from Bangladesh on August 5 is still not stopping. Incidents of violence against Hindus have not stopped yet. Hindu minority leaders have requested interim government chief Mohammad Yusuf to take action and protect them. In a meeting with Yunus on the occasion of Janmashtami on Monday, Hindu leaders raised the issue of usurping their properties including temple land. They demanded the government to help them. In response, Mohammad Yunus assured that every Bangladeshi is his family and will be protected under all circumstances.
This is the second meeting between the leaders of the minority community and Mohammad Yunus. Earlier also, Hindu leaders had called upon the Bangladesh government to protect them. Let us tell you that after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, there have been reports of attacks on Hindus and Christians in many parts of the Muslim-majority nation Bangladesh. An official statement said, Hindu leaders appreciated Yunus’ comments on Dhakeshwari Temple, one of the oldest temples in the country, and said that this would “help in building a non-communal society in the country and ensure religious harmony in the society”. Also saying that just saying things will not work, they raised a new demand that the land and land of Hindu temples is being grabbed, stop it.
It is worth noting that Hindus constitute about 8% of Bangladesh’s population of about 170 million. The Indian government has raised the issue of attacks on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh with the interim government.
Yunus said- every Bangladeshi is our family, we will protect them
Mohammad Yunus said Bangladesh is “a big family and the government’s responsibility is to protect the rights of every citizen”. He said he wanted to create a Bangladesh where everyone could practice their faith without fear and where no temple needed protection. In a meeting with Hindu leaders, he further said, “Our responsibility is to establish the rights of every citizen. Our job is to ensure justice for every citizen.”
Yunus wishes Happy Janmashtami
Yunus along with Hindu leaders exchanged greetings on the occasion of Janmashtami. The Hindu leaders said they have sought blessings of Lord Krishna for harmony and prosperity of Bangladesh and the interim government. Hindu leaders said they have postponed Janmashtami celebrations in flood-affected areas of the country. They said they have sent food and relief to the flood-hit areas. Devastating floods in eastern Bangladesh have displaced lakhs of people and killed nearly 20 people.
