Orders for CBI inquiry into the case of substandard medicines being found in Delhi government hospitals.
New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into the matter of supply of ‘substandard’ medicines to Delhi government hospitals. Sources gave this information on Friday. Let us tell you that in December, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi V.K. Saxena had recommended a CBI investigation into the case to the Home Ministry.
Letter written by Delhi Government
Let us tell you that the Vigilance Directorate of Delhi Government had written a letter to the Union Home Ministry on Thursday. Also, the Home Ministry was requested to hand over the investigation into the supply of substandard medicines in the hospitals under the state government to the CBI. Sources in the Aam Aadmi Party-led government said that the Delhi government will recommend to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to suspend the Health Secretary pending investigation in this matter. Earlier, Health Minister Saurabh Bhardwaj had demanded action against the Health Secretary regarding this matter.
Lieutenant Governor had recommended CBI investigation
In fact, last week, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Saxena had recommended a CBI probe into the alleged supply of medicines that had failed ‘quality standard tests’ and could ‘put people’s lives in danger.’ In the letter sent by the Vigilance Directorate to the Union Home Ministry, it was said that “I have been directed to say that action on the supply of such ‘poor quality’ medicines should not be limited to the Central Procurement Agency (CPA). Rather, there is a need to investigate the entire supply chain and in that investigation, the role of the suppliers who purchase medicines from manufacturers and deliver those medicines to hospitals (patients) should also be examined.
Many samples failed during testing
It said that “the seriousness of the matter and the need to expose the intentions of the company in supplying ‘substandard medicines’.” It was also said that the case would be handed over to the CBI for further investigation. Handing over is requested. According to officials, the substandard medicines found include ‘Cephalexin’, a drug used in the treatment of lung and urinary tract infections. According to the Vigilance Department report submitted to the Lieutenant Governor, out of 43 samples of drugs sent to government laboratories, three failed tests and 12 reports were pending. Besides, five of the other 43 samples sent to private laboratories failed.
