On Tuesday, the Supreme Court has issued a major directive on the issue of encroachment on national highways in the country. The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to form teams to monitor and remove encroachment on national highways. The court has also asked the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to create a portal on which common people can complain about encroachment on national highways.
Order to issue toll free number also
While hearing the case of encroachment on highways, the Supreme Court, apart from directing to widely publicize the portal, has also asked the government to issue a toll free number on which people can complain about encroachment on highways. The Supreme Court has asked the Central Government to implement these instructions by 30 September.
Instructions to present action figures in court
While hearing this case, the Supreme Court has asked the Union Road Transport Ministry to present the data of action taken as per the circular of 18 March 2020 in the court. A bench of Justice Abhay S Oak and Justice Augustine George Masih has given this direction while hearing a public interest petition.
An order will also come regarding the state highway
While hearing the case, the Supreme Court has said that it has currently given this order for national highways and during further hearing, it will also issue orders on the highways of the state government i.e. state highways. The next hearing on this case in the Supreme Court will be on October 14.
