Supreme Court has hurt sentiments: Chhattisgarh CM on premature release of Rajiv Gandhi’s killers – Fast Hindi News
Janjgir-Champa (Chhattisgarh): Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel on Saturday reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision allowing premature release on grounds of good conduct to the killers of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Baghel said that the apex court has not only hurt the sentiments of the Congress but the people of the country. He said, “The convicts were released prematurely. Congress national spokesperson Jairam Ramesh also made a statement that this should not have happened.
Meanwhile, Congress MP KC Venugopal questioned the Center for maintaining silence on the release.
“There should be no sympathy with terrorists. The condemnable silence of the Modi government on the release of the culprits of Rajivji’s killers is a compromise with the terrorist incident. And those who applaud the release of those terrorists are actually encouraging them indirectly,” Congress MP KC Venugopal tweeted.
Rajiv Gandhi’s killers, serving life term, were released by the apex court on Friday on the grounds of good conduct in jail.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a female suicide bomber from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) group on May 21, 1991, during a public rally in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Seven convicts were sentenced to death for their role in the murder. Their names included Nalini Sriharan, RP Ravichandran, Jayakumar, Santhan, Murugan, Robert Payas and AG Perarivalan.
In the year 2000, the sentence of Nalini Sriharan was reduced to life imprisonment. Later in the year 2014, the sentence of the other six convicts was also reduced and in the same year J Jayalalithaa, the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, recommended the release of all the seven convicts in the case.
In May this year, AG Perarivalan, one of the seven convicts, was released after spending 31 years in jail.
