Supreme Court may get 5 new judges soon, Center told Supreme Court – Collegium’s recommendation will be approved soon
On December 13, 2022, the Collegium recommended 5 names for appointment as Supreme Court judges. In which Justice Pankaj Mithal, Justice Sanjay Karol, Justice P.V. The names of Sanjay Kumar, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah, and Justice Manoj Mishra were included. His appointment has not yet been notified by the government.
The sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court is only 34, but currently 27 judges are working. Thus, there are 7 vacancies. On January 31, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended elevation of Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Arvind Kumar as judges in the apex court. Justice Bindal is the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and Justice Kumar is the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court.
The top court was hearing a contempt petition filed by the Advocates’ Association of Bangalore against the Centre’s violation of the deadline for judicial appointments.
