Supreme Court will get Dalit judge, Center accepts collegium’s recommendation – India TV Hindi

Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Prasanna Bhalchandra Varale will become the judge of the Supreme Court. Accepting the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, the Union Law Ministry has given the green signal to Varle’s appointment. Justice Varale is set to fill the only vacancy in the Supreme Court that fell vacant after the retirement of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul in December.

Union Minister gave information

Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal said on his Twitter handle that he is pleased to appoint Justice Prasanna Bhalchandra Varale, Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, as a judge after consultation with the Honorable Chief Justice of India.

Senior most judge from SC community

Justice Prasanna Bhalchandra Varale served as a judge of the Bombay High Court for 14 years before his transfer as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in October 2022. At present he is the only Chief Justice of the High Court belonging to the Scheduled Caste community. According to Varle, I was fortunate to be born in a family that was blessed by Dr. BR Ambedkar. I am in this great institute because of the great scholar and political thinker.

Have pulled up Maharashtra and Karnataka government

Justice Varale is known for initiating suo motu cases in public interest and has repeatedly pulled up the Maharashtra and Karnataka governments for his conduct. Under his watch the Karnataka High Court took cognizance of several news reports to ask tough questions of the administration and also punished the guilty officials.
